Why Following Your Passion Can Lead You Away From God's Purpose - Day 2

Purpose is not the same thing as passion. Purpose is based on your assignment, passion is based on your feelings. Now, I wanna go over those two things because it's so important that as you you follow along, this one hundred days of purpose, you need to understand the differences between those two. Over the next one hundred days, we're going on an exciting journey to help you discover your purpose. I believe that your best days are ahead of you and God created you for a purpose with a purpose. You have a specific assignment on this planet that no one else can complete but you. So let's dive right in. Purpose is in passion. I think it's it's important for you to understand that and why chasing what you love can still leave you so empty inside, it can leave you so unfulfilled and that's something that you have to understand the difference between the two because as you're gonna realize people are telling that you changed your passion, you know, do this, do that, but then at the end of the day, you realize that you still don't feel fulfilled. So why do so many people burn out? Passion is a feeling that you get. Purpose is an assignment. Confusing them cost people so many years. There are people today that have been pursuing their passion which was not their purpose. And by the time that they get older, they realize that man for the past fifteen years, the past twenty years, sometimes even more forty years, I've been pursuing a passion that is not connected to my purpose. But we wanna be able to fix that. And the anchor verse today is, for we are God's handiwork created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians two and ten. Now the advice that leaves you empty, I wanna go over this. You're told this, find what you love and the rest will follow. If you can just find that one thing, have people told you that before and you know, I've said this myself before that hey, you know, just find what you love and everything else will fall into place for you. That's what you got to do, just find it. Well, that's not the reality. The reality is find what you were made to carry and the love grows into it. Find what you were made to do, find what that assignment is and oftentimes that assignment can start from something that you're passionate about that you just started to do. But you have a specific assignment. Now the older you get, the less time that you have. You don't have time to linger around. You don't have time to wait and see and and hope this this happens. You gotta get on the ball. You gotta get on and that's why I believe in Psalms one thirty nine says that you're a fearful and wonderful mate. You know, before God created you, he knew everything about your purpose. Your purpose is something that differentiates you from the rest of the people on this planet and that is something that you gotta make time to find it. You know, I've seen interviews of older people in their sixties, seventies and eighties and they ask them questions, know, what do you regret the most? What do you regret the most? And most of them say things like, I wish I would have found my purpose sooner. I wish I would have found my assignment sooner. I wasted forty years, fifty years, I wasted sixty and there is some people that are in their eighties and still have no clue what their purpose is and that is not the place that you want to be. So that's the difference between what you're told and what's true. Now, there are four ways to tell the difference. Most people never check. I wanna help you to identify the four ways that you can be able to understand the difference. So passion asks what I love. Purpose asks what I'm for. What am I for? What am I for? Purpose always ask deep questions. Passion ask questions they just want to fulfill that temporary desire, but purpose wanna go much deeper. Purpose wanna find out, ask the right question. Number two, passion serves me, purpose serves someone else. Now I wanna park you for a moment because this is one of the most critical points that you have to understand about purpose. When you talk about purpose, your purpose is never connected to just you. Your purpose is almost always connected to someone, something out there that is so much more bigger than you. You know, for me, my purpose is my kids to be able to make sure that I'm providing for them, that that I'm leading them in the right way, that I'm I'm being a good role model for them, so when they start their families and they start to, you know, have kids and so on and so forth, they can be able to take what they've learned. Right? That's a greater purpose for me. They are my kids, they are my greatest assignment. So I wanna make sure that I'm leading them in the right way. So again, is always selfish, it's always about me, what makes me happy, what I gotta do, but your purpose is different. Number three, passion runs on feelings. Purpose holds when the feelings leave. You know, are people today that, you know, they're like they're like the wind. You don't know where they're coming from, where they're going, when they're coming, when they're going, one minute they're here, the next minute they're somewhere else, they're all over the place. It's based off of feelings. You know, I feel like doneness, I feel like I feel like Well, your purpose is it goes far beyond those feelings because those feelings, they're gonna evaporate. Those feelings, they're not always gonna be the same. Take for example, when you move in a new city, you're excited about it, you can't wait to explore things, you can't wait to do different things. I mean, just walking down the street, you're so passionate about it, but then after a while of living in that city, of living in that town, you realize like, I'm not sure if I really wanna be here anymore. And the same thing too with relationships. When you get a new relationship, oh you're excited, oh there's that passion there. But after a few months and then that passion leaves, that's when the reality hits. Number four, passion is found inward. Purpose gets confirmed outward. So your purpose is never connected to you. Your purpose is always connected to something greater than you, something out there. Your purpose is connected to someone. Your purpose always almost have a name. Maybe it's a specific country, as I just say for me, my purpose, one of it is my kids. Maybe it can be a specific country, maybe it can be a specific thing that you do, helping the needy, you know, an organization, whatever that thing is, it's not always just about you and I think because of the society that we live in today, such, you know, egotistical, such selfish, self centered, always thinking about, oh, me me me. We forget to realize that there's greater than you. There's so much more greater than you. What do you love and what are you for? Passion asks what I love, purpose asks what I'm for. When you're passionate, you wanna do what makes you feel good. When you're passionate, you wanna pursue things that, you know, that you wanna do, you're not thinking about anybody else, most of the times, if you're honest. When you're passionate, you just wanna move on that feeling, you wanna move on that emotion. Now, we're gonna take a look in a moment for you to realize that passion is not all wrong, but I wanna clarify the difference between your passion and your purpose. So you love music, that doesn't tell you whether you're meant to perform, teach, produce or worship. So just because you want to do music, it doesn't necessarily meant that you're meant to perform all over the world. You're meant to teach music, you know, at Juilliard or something or you meant to produce it or you meant to be a worship leader or be part of a choir or start a group and there are people today that they got a passion for music and they want they've gone on tour, you know, they teach music, they perform it all over the place and that is not their purpose. We treat enjoyment as evidence. Enjoyment is a clue not a calling. What you love points at a direction, It doesn't hand you the assignment. So it's letting you know that you're onto something here. If you love this thing, maybe that's where you need to start to look. Maybe that's just the direction that you can you can kind of fill out and and see, know, maybe this is it, maybe it's not. But again, that's something that's gonna take some time, it's not something that just happened overnight. Galatians six and four, each one should test their own actions. Who's better off because of what you're pursuing? Now this is vital, who is better off? Passion always serves me. Purpose serves someone else. Passion, what do I want? Purpose, how can I make a great impact in someone else's life? What can I do for someone else? Ask who is helped when you do things. If the answer is only you, now it may still be a good thing but that's not the purpose. We assume self fulfillment is the goal. In the bible and the scripture gifts are given for other people, right? When Jesus was born, the wise men came and gave gifts. So it's not just about you. Your purpose almost always have someone else's name on it. So who are you connected to? Who is waiting for you? Who are you called to serve? First Corinthians twelve seven, now to each one the manifestation of the spirit is given for the common good. Again, it's not about you. What have you kept doing on this on the days you don't feel like doing? On those days when you're bored and you're tired and passion runs on feelings, purpose holds when feelings leave because you're gonna have times when your feelings are going to go away. You're not always gonna be, you know, excited about doing things you want to do, you're not always gonna wanna pursue those things that that is your assignment, you know, but that's when you push past just your feelings. Every calling has a season where it stops being exciting. Passion quits there, Purpose keeps showing up. The people that are living on purpose, they show up every day, it's way beyond just how they feel. You know, we think that those feelings that that were wrong, but usually it means we arrive at the real work. So when your feelings stop, all the excitement stop, now the real work begins. The things you still do on an ordinary Tuesday is closer to your purpose than the thing that thrills you. Those days that you don't feel like doing anything, the days that you're bored, the days that you're like, man, I'm I don't wanna get this done, well, that can be letting you know that's probably what you need to be doing anyway. Colossians three twenty three, whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord. Okay. So now, who who has told you what they see in you? When people see something in you, that is how they're able to discover something. I remember listening to when Denzel Washington was talking about a woman, you know, who was I think it was like at a barber shop or something, he was young, a woman came to him and and said to him, give him a prophetic word that you're you're gonna impact the world, your gift, you're gonna travel all over the world. And at that age, he didn't really understood what that meant. And for those of you who don't know Danza Washington, this is the, you know, one of the greatest actors of all time, and his gift got him to travel around the world. So again, it's so much more about more than you. Passion is found inward, purpose gets confirmed outward. You can talk yourself into a into a passion alone in the room. Purpose gets recognized by people who watch you work. You can watch people and say, wow, there's something there, you know, this is definitely their purpose. You know, we'll look for purpose and private reflection only. God usually confirms it through community and fruit. So when you begin to bear fruit, the reason why you bear fruit because you gotta get pruned, you go through challenges, God has to test your character and when you are living a purposeful life, your character will get tested. Because when you have passion and all you have is passion, it's like this, you're on the roller coaster. One minute you're down, the next minute you're up, so you're going on this roller coaster and you've probably been on a roller coaster for a long period of time, but when you're passionate, when you're on a purpose, you're steady no matter what. If nobody around you has ever named it, you know, just sit with that. Don't panic, just ask. Again, I talk about asking the right questions. Proverbs fifteen twenty two, plan fails for lack of counsel but with many advisors they succeed. You gotta get some counsel. You're not lost because you haven't found your passion. You may be tired because you were chasing the wrong thing. See, purpose is always quiet. It's also steady as I mentioned, it's not fluctuating up and down, it's steady regardless of what you go through. Now, where they meet, the best place to live is where they overlap and I wanna talk about this overlap and what that overlap looks like. So now you have what you love, the energy that sustain it and you have what you're good at, the capacity God built in it. All of us are built with a certain level of capacity and you have to find out what that is. And then what others need, the reason it matters. That is where your assignment is, at this intersection of what you love, what you what you're good at, and what others need. That is how you merge and you blend all of those things together. Now, versus purpose, you know, purpose is your assignment, you know, when you love something, it gives you some sense of direction on where to go. Purpose has someone else's name on it, it's not just about you, it's bigger than you, greater than you. Purpose holds when the feelings leave, when you don't feel like doing it anymore, and I'm sure that you've heard professional athletes, you know, talk about, you know, just runners that second wind when you don't feel like doing it again, you just have to keep pushing. Purpose get confirmed outward. It's not about you.
