“God, is that You—or is it just me?”

If you’ve ever asked that question while facing an important decision, this teaching is for you.

In “Is It God’s Voice—or Your Own Thoughts? How to Tell the Difference,” I explore how to approach spiritual discernment with greater intentionality, humility, and biblical grounding.

I also share a real-life moment when an unexpected truck repair left me seeking direction—and why difficult decisions remind us to examine more than our immediate emotions.

We’ll examine:

Scripture — why the Bible is foundational for testing what you believe God may be saying.

The Holy Spirit — how to approach impressions, conviction, and a sense of peace without treating every feeling as divine instruction.

Dreams, people, and patterns — why these may deserve attention, but still require careful examination.

Distraction and selective hearing — how busyness, fear, and personal preferences can influence what you think you hear.

Intentional stillness — making time to listen instead of filling every moment with words or notifications.

Journaling and wise counsel — recording what you sense, testing it over time, and inviting trustworthy believers to help you recognize blind spots.

This is not about forcing an answer or assuming your first thought is God’s voice. It’s about creating space for reflection while staying grounded in Scripture.

A strong feeling, repeated theme, or vivid dream is not proof of divine origin. Never make a major life decision solely because of an impression or dream. Consider the facts, pray, examine Scripture, and seek wise counsel.

The question isn’t only “What am I hearing?”
It’s “How am I testing it—and am I willing to hear something different from what I want?”

What helps you make space to listen—quiet prayer, Scripture, journaling, or conversations with trusted believers? Share your experience in the comments.
