You’ve been attending church. You’ve been listening to messages. But when you look back over the past year, can you recognize meaningful growth?

Getting older is not the same as growing in faith. And being familiar with Christian language is not the same as developing spiritual maturity.

In “You Go to Church—but Are You Actually Growing?” I share an eight-part framework for examining your spiritual development, strengthening your foundations, and becoming more intentional about the way you live.

Drawing on an analogy with developmental stages, I explore these eight areas:

Trust and foundations — understanding what you believe and learning to depend on God.

Obedience and spiritual independence — following God’s guidance rather than simply copying other people.

Purpose in God’s kingdom — recognizing your gifts and considering how to use them.

Discipleship and spiritual growth — developing knowledge, discipline, prayer, and consistent engagement with Scripture.

Identity in Christ — grounding your worth in your faith rather than other people’s labels or approval.

Commitment to community — building relationships that offer encouragement, support, and accountability.

Fruitful service — using your time, gifts, and resources to help others.

Spiritual legacy and wisdom — reflecting on what you are passing on to the next generation.

We’ll also examine five foundational Christian teachings: the Trinity, the deity and humanity of Christ, salvation by grace through faith, the authority of Scripture, and resurrection and eternal life.

This is a teaching framework for reflection—not a clinical assessment or a rigid timetable everyone must follow. Growth can be uneven, and difficult seasons do not automatically mean you have failed.

The question isn’t only “How long have I been a believer?”
It’s “What am I learning, how am I living, and where do I need to grow next?”

Which area needs your attention right now—trust, obedience, purpose, discipline, identity, community, service, or legacy? Share your answer in the comments.
